Devangan meaning ‘God’s Courtyard’ in Hindi language is a 10 room riverside lodge in Lata village on the Joshimath-Malari highway.  Its 25 Km upstream of Joshimath along the Dhauli Ganga river.  The lodge offers basic amenities such as clean rooms with attached  wc washrooms, fresh linen and homely cooked food. We offer whatever fresh, traditional and organic is available including vegetarian and non vegetarian.  Here you won’t find printed menu, TV or a room service call button. The entire construction is made of pre fabricated structure with tin roof and false ceiling. The intermittent connectivity at the place also provides an additional opportunity for digital detox.

The lodge is best suited for off road travelers  who are looking for a more immersive experience with nature and culture.  It’s also an ideal base for responsible trekkers planning to explore the bio-culture diversity and mesmerizing landscape and wilderness of the world heritage Nanda Devi National Park. The lodge is managed under the direct supervision of the Mountain Shepherds Initiative Pvt. Ltd  as a part of its objective to promote community owned tourism in the natural resource rich but economically poor regions of Uttarakhand.

Opening shortly within the lodge campus is an Interpretation Center on the Bio-Cultural diversity of the Nanda Devi National Park region. The lodge is primarily used by our subsidiary Nanda Devi Institute to run its various adventure related courses and for the unique  Interpretative Trek for Nanda Devi National Park. However we have reserved three rooms for the off-road responsible travelers who are interested in exploring our region.

  • Lodging
  • Treks for Nanda Devi National Park and other destinations
  • Bird watching trails
  • Hike to village Tolma and homestay
  • Interpretation Center and souvenier shop

Please note it is mandatory to show a legally valid photo ID at the time of check-in at the lodge. As per legal requirement, the lodge has the right to keep a self attested photocopy of your Id.

You can hike up to the summer Lata village which is 1.5 Km from the road head. Village Lata is considered as the cultural capital of malla painkhanda region. If interested, you can have the opportunity to visit the courtyard of  12th century temple of Goddess   Nanda Devi. The temple usually remains close and opens on special occasions only.  You can also plan an overnight home-stay trip to the beautiful village of Tolma on the lap of Dronagiri peak. This involves a one way uphill hike of three kilometers from Suraithota, a small market 6 kilometers further up from the lodge. Our staff can help you in organizing your hike and home stay at Tolma village. Another option is to simply drive  to the last village of Niti on the Indo-Tibet border. The changing Trans Himalayan landscape and ruggedness of the terrain vis a vis the location of the tiny villages surviving on rain fed agriculture will subtly reveal the hardiness and ingenuity of the Bhotiya community who are indigenous to this unique landscape. Or you can simply rehearse your badminton skills in the lodge campus.

Environmental Ethics

Running a lodge actually requires running a laundry in the backstage to insure continuous supply of fresh linen. Being a commercial enterprise from the land of Chipko Movement we are well aware of our responsibility towards conservation, sustainable resource use and equity. We use non chemical natural Soap Nut  as detergent for laundry and non chemical toiletries in our lodge. For trash management we segregate the non degradable waste as recyclable and non recyclable before proper disposal at Joshimath. While organizing treks our emphasis primarily remains in minimizing the generation of trash during trekking by repackaging the goods in reusable containers. Whatever trash generated in the forms of empty food cans etc is brought back for segregation at the lodge. We prefer to properly document our trash management process. You are welcome to visit our Trash Management Log page on facebook to check the evidence.
